North Atlantic Treaty Organization

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military alliance established in 1949, consisting of North American and European countries, formed to ensure mutual defense and security against external threats. NATO operates under a system of collective defense, whereby an attack against one member is considered an attack against all members, as outlined in Article 5 of the NATO treaty.
