Diversion Rights

Also known as "appropriative rights," diversion rights allow entities to divert water from its natural source for use in a different location. These rights are typically granted based on a "first in time, first in right" principle, meaning the earliest users have senior rights to the water source. This system is common in parts of the western United States.
